Will my move be quoted on a per-hour rate?

Pat and Martha have lived in their ranch-style house in the San Antonio suburbs for the last 35 years. This home holds so many sweet memories: bringing home babies from the hospital and watching those babies learn to crawl, then walk, then cause mass destruction. (Martha will never forget the day her son used a permanent marker to draw dinosaurs on the living room wall!) But they’ve been empty nesters for a while now, and they’ve decided it’s time to sell their house and move into their dream home just outside of the city. Martha is excited to have a big yard with a swing set for the grandchildren. Pat wants a workshop with enough space to work on his boat.

When it comes to finding a moving company, they care more about quality of service than price, but they’d like to know what to expect cost-wise and don’t really know where to start.

Meanwhile, their youngest daughter, Kate, is about to graduate from University of Texas at Austin. She currently lives in a one-bedroom apartment off campus but is hoping to move across town to be closer to her new job. Between studying for finals and finishing her thesis, she doesn’t have time to move her belongings, but she is having a hard time finding moving company pricing information online.

Whether it’s more like Kate’s or Pat and Martha’s, we know that getting your move set up can be difficult. It’s hard to make a budget when there’s not a lot of detailed price information out there. This blog post will help you answer the question: how much do moving companies charge per hour?

When is a move quoted on an hourly rate?

Although Kate and her parents’ moving needs are very different, they do have one thing in common: they’re all relocating locally. While longer-distance moves are rated based on mileage and the weight of the shipment, local moves are rated by the hour. This is because instead of having a line haul driver, your branch will actually send out a local crew to pack, load, and move your belongings.

Some intrastate moves can also be rated hourly depending on where you’re going. This is decided on a case-by-case basis, but typically if your destination is within 100 miles, your move can get the hourly rate.

How much do moving companies charge per hour?

We want to be up-front with our prices, so we’ve provided an estimate for several of our branches to give you a baseline for setting your price expectations.

A few things to note about Appleton’s pricing:

  1. All of our moves have a 4 hour minimum charge.
  2. The estimates provided are for Monday — Friday only (different rates apply for weekends).
  3. The estimates provided are for off-peak moving season only (different rates apply for the peak season).

Our hourly rates are based on branch location and the size of your move. For example, a smaller move like Kate’s apartment will most likely only need two men and a truck, while Pat and Martha’s move may require 3 or 4 men and a truck.
