What you need to know about scheduling your move and paying movers

Did you know that the average American will move approximately 12 times during their lifetime? That’s a lot! Whether you’re moving for the first time or the twelfth time, you probably have multiple questions running through your head, like “when do I need to schedule a moving company?” and “when do I need to pay movers?” and “do I have enough coffee to get me through today?” While we can’t advise on your caffeine intake, we can assist with your other moving day concerns. In this article we provide information on securing your moving dates as well as when to pay movers and some things to watch out for when paying them. Our hope is that it will help you feel confident about your next move!

How soon do I need to make a decision?

So how soon do you need to book a mover? The easy answer is “as soon as possible!” but that’s not very helpful advice when you’re already stressed out about your moving timeline.

When scheduling your moving dates, the time of year you’re moving is an important consideration. Peak moving season occurs between April to September, with the summer months being the most popular time to move. We recommend giving us a one-month notice in order to secure your preferred date, however, at a minimum we need 14 days notice during peak season and a 7- to 14-day notice if you’re moving during the off-season.

Keep in mind that while these minimum notices are recommended, they’re definitely not rigid. If you’re supposed to move in a week and still need to find a moving company, please give us a call! Your move is our priority, and we’ll do our best to get you on the schedule.

Do I need to put down a deposit to secure my date?

You may be wondering when to pay movers. Before your move? After? Keep in mind that no mover should ever ask for a deposit, and if they do, you should be wary about working with them. We’ve had clients come to us who have been scammed by companies that took their deposit and then never showed up. At Appleton, we will never ask for money up front. Here’s a timeline of what to expect when you work with us:

1. On-site or virtual survey

This is where we’ll get to know you and create an individualized estimate based on your personal moving needs. We’ll discuss packing, storage (if applicable), and any other factors that will affect the price and timeline of your move. You’ll get to know us and have a better idea of whether we’re the right fit for you!

2. Review quote and sign contract

After the survey we’ll present an estimate to you, which will include your preferred dates for packing and loading, as well as the delivery window. There’s no need to put down a deposit to secure those dates. If everything in the estimate looks acceptable to you and you’d like to move forward, then you’ll sign the contract and we’ll see you on moving day!

So… how do I know when to pay movers?

Like we said before, a moving company asking for a deposit is a huge red flag. Even if you’re using mom-and-pop movers from down the street, you should never have to pay them before your belongings are delivered to their final destination.

At Appleton, you can pay via credit card, cashier’s check, or cash (personal checks or money orders are not accepted). If you’re paying with a credit card, we will send you an e-doc to sign that has a link where you can add your card info. This information will be uploaded into either the United Van Lines or Mayflower system, depending on your branch location. If you’d like to pay with a cashier’s check or cash, payment is accepted at time of delivery. No money will be accepted prior to delivery.

Securing your dates ahead of time gives you peace of mind and the ability to focus on all the other items on your ever-growing to-do list. If you’re ready to get started, give us a call to schedule your on-site or virtual survey!
